Tales tainted —
By love, death & war —
Play out daily
On semi-circle stages in our lives.
Watching warily,
We laugh & cry,
Struggling to respond
In an emotionally appropriate way.
“What’s so funny?!”
Coach “Big-Tall Thin-Man” shouts,
Challenging my half-smile,
While others stand stoic-faced.
Stunned silence.
Eyes fixed, globally bulged.
Breathing stopped, heart-exploding;
Legs wobbly, knees-tottering.
“What’s so funny?!”
He shouts again,
More firmly, now —
Face-to-face, eye-to-eye.
“What’s so FUNNY?!”
Even LOUDER.
Knees collapse;
My chubby body hits the floor.
