“I read the news today, oh boy …” The Beatles in “A Day in the Life

I sat down to do my Sunday Meditation this morning, but decided to check the news first. Big mistake: “20 Feared Dead in Shooting.” (My wife just walked in: “It’s up to 50,” she said.)

The attack occurred at Pulse. Google it, and you’ll read: “DJs spin popular music at this high-energy gay dance club with regular theme nights and specials.” Last night’s theme was “Latino Flavor.” According to MapQuest, Pulse is about a hundred miles from my house; maybe a two-hour drive, maybe less. That’s close; uncomfortably close.

Orlando is a vacation destination known for Mickey Mouse and the Magic — not mass murder. Nobody could have imagined this horrendous event. Bloody. Violent. Heartless. Gruesome.

I don’t mention this to upset you — though it is sickeningly unsettling. Fifty people who went out for an evening of fun, dead. How many families does that scar? Hundreds, directly. Indirectly? Too many to count.

They’ll be other news today: Some good; some bad. It’s hard to conceive of anything more brutal. CNN says the shooting is being categorized as “domestic terror.” Since police shot and killed the gunman, we may never know exactly what twisted thought-process hatched this vicious act.

What’s my point?

We live like we’re going to be around forever, forgetting how temporary life is. The Book of Job (NLT) puts it this way: “You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.”

That’s a good reason to try and make every minute count. … Starting now.
